Sometimes a kit is lacking in detail, has a broken piece, or requires some extra work to come out they way the builder wants. That is were scratchbuilding comes in.Scratchbuilding does not always mean creating a complete model from scratch, using household items and sheet styrene plastic. It can be as simple as recreating a part lost from the sprue, or adding to a kit to make it a derivative of the original subject.
