BONO SINGS AT PAVAROTI'S WEDDING
Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, the world's most famous voice, married his long-time companion and former personal assistant Nicolletta Mantovani on stage at a theatre, but she made him wait before saying "I do". The couple were married by Modena mayor Giuliano Barbolini, fittingly, on stage in his home town in front of around 600 invited guests on an occasion which glittered with celebrity.
An emotional Pavarotti, 68 -- who wore a striking white hat, dark suit and
vivid red tie -- said the couple had chosen the theatre as the venue because
"the theatre is the church of artists". Towards the end of the ceremony,
BONO OF U2 jumped on stage to sing "Stand By Me" with Italian crooner
Zucchero, joined by U2's The Edge on guitar with the beaming bride in the middle.
"It was a very touching ceremony," said a woman on the guest list,
mobbed outside the theatre by journalists, for whom Italy's wedding of the year
was strictly off limits.Appropriately, for perhaps his most important stage
performance, the maestro's personal dietician was among the witnesses on stage.
MUSIC SALES DECLINE 20% IN 2003
The value of music sales in the Republic declined 20% in 2003 as consumers opted for the internet over high street stores. The Irish Recording Music Association (IRMA) said provisional figures for 2003 show that Irish consumers spent €108.5m on CDs, records and cassettes, a sharp slump from sales of €135.9m reported in 2002.
The industry believes that sales of CD's on the internet, greater price competition and illegal copying of CDs are the main factors haemorrhaging sales.IRMA is to step up a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers posed by downloading music illegally using the internet later this month.
The association is planning to write to companies and universities warning them that if they allow staff to download music illegally, they will be prosecuted.
