(1910 census not found for Joel A. Roberts-Ninde and Lee J. Ninde, presumable in Indiana.)
Joel A. Roberts-Ninde (b. Dec. 1874 in Mobile, AL) was the daughter of Willis Roberts (b. 1838 in AL) of Mobile, AL, and Moffette/Moffitte (b. 1842 in AL, whose father was from GA and mother from SC). An elder half-sister, Lillie F. Taylor, was born 1862 per the 1880 census above (or June 1864, per the 1900 Mobile, AL, census, where she remained single at age 35). That year Joel A. Roberts, age 25, is said to have met Lee J. Ninde in Indianapolis, Indiana. They were married that same year and made their home in his home town in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
In 1860 Judge Lindley Ninde had built a large mansion in Allen County, Indiana. The house was called "Wildwood" and sat on a large tract of land on what became Fairfield Avenue in Fort Wayne. His wife Beulah produced four children. Lee J. Ninde was born in 1874 and graduated from Harvard in 1895 with a law degree. He married Joel A. Roberts five years later, in 1900. The family home, which Joel refused to live in, later became part of Lutheran Hospital. Joel wanted a smaller, more practical home and designed it herself.

Joel Roberts Ninde (1874-1916) Joel Ninde, a woman self-taught
in architecture, designed and built over 300 houses by
1914. Working with her husband, attorney and salesman Lee
J. Ninde, through their Wildwood Builders Company, Ninde
and her design partner Grace Crosby created Colonial Revival and
Craftsman style houses with innovative features appealing to the housewife.
The company also published The Wildwood Magazine, a nationally known
publication on the subjects of architecture, city planning, and interior
design, from 1913-1917. Joel Ninde died of a stroke in 1916 at age 42.
Although examples of her work survive in various parts of the city, both the
South Wayne Historic District (42001-42138) and the potential Shawnee Drive
Historic District (43001-43022) contain significant concentrations.
Her own home is located at 902 W. Wildwood Ave. (Zip Code 42016).

Joel Roberts Ninde
Designing homes that were "pleasing to the eye, economical, convenient, and
efficient," Joel Ninde became one of the most popular early
twentieth century architects in Fort Wayne. A woman with
no formal architectural training, Mrs. Ninde designed her
first house for her husband, attorney Lee J. Ninde, and
herself after refusing to live in the family estate "Wildwood,"
with its dark and drafty rooms. Her innovative design became noticed
and sold rapidly. The same thing happened with her second house. Eventually
Lee Ninde gave up his law practice and in 1910 formed a real estate
and construction firm called the Wildwood Builders Company, establishing
Joel and her partner Grace Crosby as designers and construction supervisors.
Joel Ninde created designs adaptable to any budget, depending on
the choice of materials and features desired, and favored the clean lines
of the Colonial Revival and Craftsman styles over frilly,
gingerbread ornamentation. In 1914, the Indianapolis News
reported that she had designed and built over 300 houses.
The Wildwood Magazine, published by the company between
1913 and 1917, was a nationally known publication on the subjects of architecture,
city planning, and interior design. Mrs. Ninde died of a stroke
in 1916 at age 42. Although examples of her work ranging
from modest cottages to large brick homes survive in
various parts of the city, the South Wayne Historic District
contains the largest concentration of Ninde's work. The following list
comprises known Ninde houses within the district: 701, 702, 706, 710, 726,
810, 814, 818, 902, 912, 922, 926, 1002, 1028 and 1025 Wildwood Avenue and
3131 South Wayne Avenue. ...

CITYSCAPES
Suburban living was a new concept
By MICHAEL HAWFIELD
from the archives of The News-Sentinel
One of the best-known neighborhoods in Fort Wayne, Wildwood Park, was among the city's earliest subdivisions. It was the pride and joy of Fort Wayne's first advocates of city planning, Lee J. Ninde and his wife, Joel Roberts Ninde. The couple gave Fort Wayne what could be considered the physical prototype of suburbia. Their Wildwood Company created a new kind of residential development, one guided by an overall plan. Their ideals called for no straight, grid-patterned streets, nor any alleys. Trees were spared wherever possible or were carefully nursed back to health. ...

Straus Brothers in Ligonier made major move in 1920
By BOB GAGEN
...Some 20 years later the Straus Brothers announced a significant land acquisition in Paulding County, Ohio, east of Fort Wayne. This was an 1,800-acre farm known as the Murray Grange, formerly owned by Judge Ninde of Fort Wayne, for the sum of $135,000. At about this time Sol Mier & Co., a Ligonier rival of the Straus Brothers, opened a new banking house — to be known as the “Bank of Wayne,” in the Tri-State Building in Fort Wayne.
