Shin Megami Tensei NOCTURNE: Solo-Hard Boss Log
Last updated at: Jun. 24, 2005 - 8:00 AM cst

I started doing something a little different recently. I started taking pics inside the battle as well so I have some screenshots of my recent boss fights. I also moved the victory screenshots to a link at the end of the paragraph.

I'm trying to offer up a bit of proof that I'm doing this and not just saying I'm doing this. I've been thinking about what I could do and I figured that I could show my Victory screens after I beat a boss. To prove I'm solo, you can see that I'm the only name on the victory screen. I know it's not *absolute* proof, but really - what can I do? I don't have a way to capture video from my TV so I'm taking photos with my digital camera so they are a little blurry.

Since the names of the bosses are not shown on the victory screen, you will have to check out a faq or guidebook or something and compare the spoils (XP, Macca, Item) they say you get after a boss to the screenshots I have. That should prove that the screens are from the bosses I say they are. Also, I didn't think of thise idea until I was going to fight Specter the first time, so Forneus isn't on here. Click the images to enlarge.

Specter - Amala Network - Lvl 17 - 17 hours
Tough fight. Certainly no push over like the last boss, Forneus. The problem with Specter is that he starts off as six different small specters and after three rounds forms a giant powerful Specter. If you can't kill any small specters by the end of three rounds, he's pretty damn strong. But once I was able to knock out one with a couple of well placed Lunges and healed up for the fourth round. Since he only had 5 specters to make the large one, his damage was down from 70 to about 45 and I managed to get in 4 Tarundas to make him pretty weak. After that the fight was over pretty quickly. Specters casts a lot of Agi spells so Shirunai was a big help in that regard. (Void fire.)
Troll -Ginza - Lvl 21 - 21 hours
The first time I fought him, he smashed my head in, but I came back with a vengance, two additional Vit points and the Counter skill. My strategy was very simple. I cast Tarunda. He hit me. I would sometimes counter attack. Repeat for 4 rounds. After that, he either tried to punch me, use berserk on me or cast Bufula (I think) at me. The ice hurt more than anything else, but 3 beads helped me through the battle. I got a bead chain in return which I will sell on the black market for 5,000 Macca. >:)
Matador - Great Underpass of Ginza - Lvl 28 - 34 hours
Another tough one. I didn't fight him but 5 or 6 times, but I took my time between fights to gain a little more power. I initially went in there with Hifumi equipped so I could Void his force magic, but I later decided to equip Kamudo to cut down on his regular attacks. I give all the credit to my win to my Counter skill as I had to use my own turns to heal constantly. Lucky for me, when he hit me, I usually hit him back. His Andulcia was weak at first, but became a problem near the end when he used Taunt and then Focus to attack me. Luckily, I survived and took a chance at attacking him with newly increased attack power to finish him off. He didn't drop any prizes, though. :(
Thor - Mantra HQ - Lvl 33 - 47 hours
Thor did a lot of lightning damage. I don't have too much to say, because I took him down pretty much the same way I took down Matador. I love guys that don't automatically counter my debuffing spells with dekunda (unlike that jerk, Dante.)
Dante - Ikebukuro - Lvl 40 - 63 hours
God, I fucking hate Dante! How high does my agility have to be before I can dodge more than one out of every damn ten attacks!? This was the toughest battle yet, but I won by having things go my way at the end. I was hit with two Bullet-Times and no panic added on me. Lucky. He criticals too damn much. Double provoked, I finished him off with two focused Counter attacks for about 650 or so damage each. Luckily, he went a couple of rounds without using Rebellion (I hate that skill) and I actually had the chance to use those focused counters.
Kaiwan - Assembly of Nihilo - Lvl 40 - 67 hours
First off, I didn't take a picture because I didn't think of this dude as a real boss... Just like a mini-boss or somthing. But I later decided to add him anyway since he was tougher than the next two guys. As you might know, there are 3 Kaiwans. That means 3 turns. 3 Turns where they are casting Mudo (death) and Evil Gaze (reduce to 1 HP) at you every 5 seconds. My strategy here was Fog Breath, Fog Breath - then Focus, Attack, Focus, Attack. Heal when I needed. 2 attacks killed a Kaiwan so that means I had to spend roughly 20 rounds avoiding constant insta-death attacks. It took about 10 tries, but by taking some risks during battle, I was able to kill them all. Kamudo was once again the magatama of choice.
Ose - Assembly of Nihilo - Lvl 41 - 68 hours
Not really a tough one. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to watch the long ass cut scene that comes before it over and over again. Ose lacked any real ability to do enough damage to me to really hurt me and my high agility helped me dodge many attacks even if I couldn't fog breath him (he has Dekunda.) Of course, I got hit a few times. Nothing two or three Beads couldn't fix though. The Focus, Counter combo is always nice (you can't critical a counter though.) Magatama was Kamudo again.
Hell Biker - Ikebekuro Hwy - Lvl 41 - 68 hours
This one was not much different than my fight with Ose. The only thing is that he had more turns and could do more damage so he did present some threat, whereas Ose did not. I used up all my MP on 2 Fog Breaths and War Cries just to find out he also has Dekunda. Well, I used one of my 3 Chakra Pots (full MP refill) and just Focused and Fog Breathed every now and then since he wouldn't use Dekunda immediately after my Fog Breath anyway. He would have been able to do enough damage to kill me if he could hit more often, but tough luck for him.
Mizuchi - Kabukicho Prison - Lvl 42 - 72 hours
Easy. Too easy. He has mostly ice attacks and I think one weak physical and some other skill that could put me to sleep or stun me or something. He only actually hit me with it twice out of all the times he used it. Fire Breath was my main attack and I threw in the occasional Focus. After awhile he would whine about me getting bigger or something. :P I equipped Wadatsumi (the 2nd magatama) which made me immune to about 80% of his attacks. Very easy. Daisoujou - Ikebukuro - Lvl 43 - 72 hours
This one was harder than the last three. He's got a variety of attacks including expel (Mahamaon) death (Mamudoon) mind affecting and life/mana draining. A couple of Fog Breaths started off the battle and that made his attacks easy to dodge. I was able to use two of my Tetraja rocks to create a shield against his spells. It's those times you are attacked by a Mamudoon spell that you feel very alone. The good thing about Tetraja rocks is that one casting will block one death attack *and* one expel attack. I'm not sure how many enemies use both mudo and hama magic, but I guess it's good to know anyway. Most of this battle was spent at 0 MP because of his Meditation skill (drain HP/MP.) I used my remaining Chakra Pots and my *one* Bead of Life and that kinda sucks. It may not seem like a big deal to you, but you have to remember I don't have allies to heal me during battle. Sui-Ki - Ikebukuro Tunnel - Lvl 48 - 90 hours
Ok, this is my first Oni battle. Well, the first one I won, anyway. This guy was not that tough. I used my stanard boss-fight strategy of War Cry and Fog Breath. He doesn't have Dekunda to cancel, so that's good. I equipped Miasma to counter his ice spells and used my magic (fire just so happens to be my specialty) to take him out. Please use this link to view the Victory Screen
Fuu-Ki - Ikebukuro Tunnel - Lvl 48 - 90 hours
This dude was a little tougher than Sui-Ki. I could equip Hifumi to void out his force magic, but I have no lightning magic to exploit his weakness. So I relied on Focusing and using my new Divine Shot skill to take this guy out. He wasn't so hard, but he'd constantly beat me in the head when he wasn't using his force magic. Not nearly as bad as Kin-Ki, who I have yet to beat. Please use this link to view the Victory Screen
White Rider - Ginza - Lvl 50 - 100 hours
This guy was surprisingly easy. I was having trouble with him at first because I knew he had the instant death expel skill, God's Bow, and I was equipping Geis to void that out. He almost never uses it, though. After getting into a battle with him with Gehenna (fire drain) equipped, I beat him. He would almost always cast Prominence and heal me and lose all four of his party's turns. I used a tetraja rock to put up an expel shield, just in case. It never came to that, though. I blasted the crap out of him and in the end, I was left with only his two goons. Please use this link to view the Victory Screen
Moirae Sisters - Ginza- Lvl 52 - 105 hours
These girls were tough at first. But I leveled and learned Void Ice and was able to come up with a winning strategy. I equipped Gehenna, which is Fire Drain/Ice Weak, but my Void Ice skill cancelled that weakness. The sisters use their own strategy. Clotho goes first and heals the party (or casts Marin Karin if everyone is at full HP) - Lachesis either buffs magic and defense or casts a defensive shield vs. either physical or magic. Lastly, Atropos will fire a spell off at me. The others would not attack me and I was able to either void or drain half of Atropos' attacks. Lots of things went into the first part of this battle. First I had to attack Clotho so she would heal on her first turn instead of casting Marin Karin on me (and perhaps ending my fight.) I decided a well placed Hellfire would keep her busy for awhile. It was a big mix of War Cry, Fog Breath, Dekaja Rocks, healing, focusing and hitting Clotho with Divine Shot until she was finally dead. It took a few tries, but I got her eventually. I decided to get her first since she was the healing and dekunda caster. With their healing and dekunda spells gone, the other two did not stand a chance. And in the end, it was an easy one on one battle. Please use this link to view the Victory Screen
Specter (2nd) - Amala Network 2 - Lvl 53 - 107 hours
Again specter began with his Agent Smith impersonation. He doesn't make a giant specter this time, though. He justs attacks, drains all of your MP and then keeps casting Megido at you. I just tried to knock them off as quickly as possible to reduce their turns so they could not drain my MP so much. A couple of Fog Breaths and War Cries, of course. Top that off with Focus + Divine Shot. Tough for him that I rock so much. :P Please use this link to view the Victory Screen
Girimehkala & Sakahagi - Yoyogi Park - Lvl 59
That giant elephant is tough. I think the fight came down to whether or not I could pull off four castings of Sukukaja before he killed me and whether or not I'd run out of healing resources. I used Kaumdo to decrease the damage dealt to me. That made me weak against his Panic Voice, but I dodged it most of the time anyway. Inbetween healing, I'd cast a Glacial Blast which did roughly 150-300 HP worth of damage depending on the number of times it hit. Sakahagi was upset over my victory, but he lacked any real capacity to harm me. A couple of divine shots took care of him. [Victory Screen]
Black Frost - Kabukicho Prison - Lvl 60
This was almost too easy. Black Frost has three different ways he could hurt you. The first is to just punch you in the face, which he almost never does. The second is to cast an ice spell at you. My Ice Void skill took care of that. And lastly, he tries to one-off you with Mamudoon. - And I equipped a magatama that protected me from that. Although he only takes 10% damage from physical attacks, I boosted up with Tarukaja and used my Focus/Divine Shot combination. With that, I was able to knock him on his face and deal about 150 damage per hit. Sure, it took awhile, but I don't think I was in any danger of dying. [Victory Screen]
Specter (3rd) - Amala Network 3 - Lvl 60
Never one to be kept down, Specter made a return and tried to take my head again. Like last time, I had to fight six specters. I used War Cry and Fog Breath to make sure they sucked at attacking and then picked them off one at a time with focused Divine Shots. The only problem here is that they constantly Gather more specters to fight me. I really have no idea how many of these dudes I killed, but eventually it got to the point where I won. I think the last two ended up blowing themselves up. [Victory Screen] Screen]
Albion - White (Amala) Temple - Lvl 63
Albion started off by busting some rhymes on my ass. Albion has four little cronies that cast various elemental spells at me. The first one is ice, so he casts mabufudyne and the such a lot. My Ice Void took care of that. The second one to go the one that casts Zan (force) spells. Before the battle I traded in Sukukaja for Void Force, so that was taken care of. The Fire and Lightning dudes could still hurt me, but they didn't get their turns very often anyway. The big thing to watch out for was Albion's Stasis Blade. If it paralyzed me, the fight was pretty much over. Even after two War Cries and two Fog Breaths, they could still pummel me to death. After a few boosts in power, I picked off the ice, force and lightning ones with some focused Divine Shots leaving only Albion and the fire guy. First I beat a little on the fire guy and then a lot on Albion until I was able to finish them off with a well placed Glacial Blast. [Victory Screen]
Skadi - Red (Amala) Temple - Lvl 66
Skadi has proved to be the easiest of the three temple guardians and I was able to take her out in my first try. She she basically has three attacks. First she uses Mazandyne. I have Void Force. Second she has Thunderclap. I equipped Geis (Null: Expel.) Third she has Earthquake, a kick ass physical skill. The only problem for her was that she uses it so predictably, that I know when to throw up an Attack Mirror. I ended up using five of the six I had gathered up until this point of the game. And once she starting using Dragon Eye, she became too absorbed and watching me void her mazandyne and thunderclap spells that she must have forgotten about earthquake. As for me, if I wasn't healing (she threw in a normal attack every now and then, plus she has Makajamon to silence me) I was throwing Bolt Storms at her. [Victory Screen]
Mara - Shibuya - Lvl 66
I had trouble with Mara awhile back. I honestly could not survive the first round. I did this time though. I used War Cry and Fog Breath to make him as harmless as a kitten... A penis shaped kitten. I boosted my power with Tarukaja, but he Dekajaed me. So I did it again and managed to get off a focused Divine Shot. It was not a critical, but was worth about 1800 points of damage. I knew I needed a critical to take him out in one round since he usually heals, but he tried to cast a spell at me on his next turn and I dodged it. Then I finished him off with a regular divine shot. I guess he should have healed first and attacked second. [Victory Screen]
Aciel - Black (Amala) Temple - Lvl 68
Aciel was probably the toughest of the three temple guardians since he has an unblockable attack that takes you down to 1 HP and he follows it up with an immediate physical attack. The good thing is that he always preceeds this attack by using his turn to cast dragon eye and then mana drain or whatever four times. Sure, this sucks up all of my MP, but at least I know when to throw up an attack mirror to block that final physical attack he makes. Other than that, it was a matter of healing, healing and getting in focused divine shots when I had the chance. [Victory Screen]
Serpahs - Mifunishiro - Lvl 68
Another group of easy bosses, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel didn't really stand a chance against me without being able to cast Dekunda. With a couple of War Cries and a couple of Fog Breaths, they were left pretty helpless. Of course they had this annoying little bit where they'd cast Tetrakarn and repel physical attacks, effectively making me have to wait the turn out. With a divine shot, I took out Raphael and followed up with Uriel. Gabriel was all by herself for a minute, but that didn't last too long anyway. [Victory Screen]
Surt - Diet Building - Lvl 70
Surt was easy. Fire attacks? Please, brotha; I have Fire Drain. Physical attacks? Just equip a phys resist magatama. The strategy here was fairly simple. I just used makakaja to boost up my magic power and then blasted away with some Bolt Storm and that was that. [Victory Screen]
Mada - Diet Building - Lvl 75
Mada gave me real trouble and this is about the time I put the game away for awhile due to boredom and having trouble beating this boss. BUT! I came back with renewed vigor and strength to face Mada once again. I don't have many pictures because I honestly did not expect to kill him so soon, but I threw some bolt storms at him and when he summoned Pazuzu, I took it out with a Mabufu rock/bolt storm combo. Well, I finally won. :) [Victory Screen]
Mot - Diet Building - Lvl 75
The basic strategy to kill Mot was pretty simple: throw Bolt Storms at him and heal when needed. That doesn't mean he was easy. Although I only fought him once, he did put up a good fight and I had to take a chance or two when deciding what to do. With his need to Makakaja himself up and then cast double Megidolaons I wasn't gaurunteed survival even at full HP. Dekaja rocks and the fact that he's weak to lightning helped me out of this situation and I won, even if one more Megidolaon could have taken me out. [Victory Screen]
Mithra - Diet Building - Lvl 76
Mithra was very easy. He killed me the first time, but after that I leveled once and sacrificed my Makakaja skill (I hope I don't need it later) for Void Death and then equipped a Void Expel magatama. Almost every one of his attacks is Death or Expel based so in our second battle I was able to focus (har har, get it?) on beating the crap out of him. And like the many bosses that fell before him, he didn't pack Dekunda so you know what that means. [Victory Screen]
Samael - Diet Building - Lvl 76
Once again, this one took two tries. Once again, my trusty skills War Cry and Fog Breath helped me defeat this dragon. Samael actually does use Dekunda, but he doesn't seem to like to cast it very much, instead focusing on Megidola and Rakukaja. So I beat him down with my new Spiral Viper skill and threw a dekaja rock at him when I thought he is defense was getting too high. [Victory Screen]
Red Rider - Great Underpass of Ginza - Lvl 77
I replaced Fire Drain with Elec Drain before this fight and equipped a Force Drain magatama so that anytime he cast Wind Cutter or Bolt Storm, I'd drain it and he'd lose all of his turns. I started off with a Spiral Viper critical and then focused with the free turn. He followed up with Terror Blade and put me in panic state with his buddies casting Tarukaja. I used a Bead, even though I was panicked and was naturally cured of the panic after that one round. Red Rider then tried several rounds of Wind Cutter and Bolt Storm and I was able to kill him with Spiral Vipers (And I looked cool while doing all of this.)(focused when I get the chance.) I actually killed him once just before this fight. but his Powers when on a Hamaon frenzy and took me out before I could finish the battle. This time I decided to Spiral Viper one for a guarunteed kill and hope that the one Hamaon attack I was going to be subject to didn't kill me. It didn't and I killed the other Power to win the day. [Victory Screen]
Black Rider - Shinjuku Medical Center - Lvl 77
Black rider was tougher than the last one. My first tactic was to go into battle with a resist phys magatama equipped, but I ended up going with void curse (to block Soul Divide) since that tactic didn't work out too well. I started off with two Fog Breaths to cut down their accuracy and a couple of War Cries to cut down their power. My Void Death skill blocked a few Hell Gazes from the two Legions that were with him and Void Curse blocked the hellish Soul Divide attack. The Legions were constantly casting Makakaja to boost Black Rider's spells so I had to keep up my War Cry tactic so that Black Rider couldn't kill me with a double Megidoloan. I got in focused spiral vipers when I had the chance and after several battles I was able to take out this horseman. I can feel your fear, Legion! [Victory Screen]
Dante - Labrynth of Amala Kalpa 3 - Lvl 77
I expected more from this dude, but he didn't put up much of a fight. All he did was throw weak physical attacks at me while I boosted up with Tarukaja. After a focused Spiral Viper, he started throwing his sword around in an arc of electricity, but I just absorbed it. A 3000 point critical spiral viper finished him off easily. [Victory Screen]
