final fantasy viii official card game & perfect visual collection
carddass masters/bandai (1999)

Here is the list of Final Fantasy VIII official trading cards. These cards were produced in 1999 by Carddass Masters and were in a very limited supply. In the U.S, packs of cards usually sold for about $5.00 in retail stores. Once these cards went out of production, the value of them naturally went up. There are 182 cards in the entire set and completing a set can be quite a task and very expensive.

A box of Final Fantasy VIII cards is redish in color and has an image of Squall on the cover. The original retail price for a pack of cards in Japan was 330 yen. I haven't been able to find out the exact price of a whole box, but it's probably about 4950 yen. Each pack of cards typically comes with 1 special card (a rare foil - that is, it has foil lettering) and 9 other cards which are divided almost evenly between Collection (C) cards and Game (G) cards. A box cards comes with 15 of these packs and no box (to my knowledge) will ever contain the same card twice. Unopened packs and boxes can sometimes still be found on eBay.

The card series itself is divided into two primary parts and each of these parts is further divided into sub-parts. The first primary part is the Perfect Visual Collection cards. These cards consist of 72 images of high quality art taken from the game. The Perfect Visual section is divided into 5 parts. They are:

Title Card: 9 cards
Illustration Gallery Card: 18 cards
Character File Card: 18 cards
Mechanic File Card: 9 cards
Animation Card: 18 cards

The front of the 9 Title Cards make up the title image (I'll post a pic in a bit.) with the reverse side serving as a card checklist of all 182 cards. The Illustration Gallery Cards are 18 images of Nomura artwork and high quality CG renders of the characters. Each Illustration Gallery Card is a rare foil card. Next, are the 18 Character File Cards. The first 9 of these cards are rare foils and the latter 9 cards are more common in game battle randers of most of the playable characters. The 9 Mechanic File cards depict 9 images of vehicles used in the Final Fantasy VIII universe and the Animation Cards show stills from the CG movies in the game.

The second section of cards is the Game Cards. They consist of 110 cards that mimic the Triple Triad cards you can find in the actual Final Fantasy VIII game. As in the game, the cards are divided into 10 levels with each level consisting of 11 cards. The first 5 levels are common monsters and these cards have silver colored trim. Levels 6 and 7 are Boss cards are are gold trimmed. Level 8 is made up of Guardian Force cards. They have gold colored trimming and black lettering. Level 9 consists of higher level GFs and have the "G.F." lettering in foil. (That is, they are rare foils.) And lastly, level 10 is comprised of character cards and each of these is a rare foil. Although these cards are nearly identical to the ones from the game, they use different images for each of the creatues on the cards.

I want this list to serve a purpose to be a guide to the set of Triple Triad cards there. Hopefully, this page can provide useful information on the cards that you are seeking. The titles shown below are the actual titles of the cards.. uhm.. condensed to make sense. :P Proper names and objects are named as in the american verison of the game.(You may notice that I have not finished... I haven't gotten around to it yet, so bear with me please.) Thanks.
