  Construct a Habitat

01/25/04

You have been hired by the Toronto Zoo to build a habitat that will house some new animals that are coming into the zoo.  You may select the animals that are coming and then build the appropriate habitat to make sure they will be able to survive.  Be sure to include the important things you have discovered exist within a habitat.

First, map out your habitat on paper.  Consider things we have previously discussed such as food chains, predatory animals, population changes and landscape changes.  Choose one of the following activities to complete.  If you want to do one of the habitats in the Hickman book please consult your teacher first for approval of materials.

As you are constructing your habitat, consider the following questions, and be prepared to show that you have met these criteria.  On a blank piece of paper make some predictions and address some of the following questions.

bullet

How will your habitat look in 10 years? (predict)

bullet

What kind of dangers does your habitat face? (predict)

bullet

Is the design lively? (analyze)

bullet

Is the temperature, humidity and light good enough for the survival of the animal? (analyze)

bullet

Does the habitat have the right choice of plants and other animals? (analyze)

bullet

Does the habitat consider the your animals need for space? (analyze and predict)

bullet

Is there enough shelter for the animals? (analyze)
