MARION BAY

APRIL VENUE

BY MARTIN JONES

Boats attending:  4

People attending: 24

Saturday morning started off looking bleak with overcast skies and a stiff breeze blowing from the southeast, certainly not ideal conditions to fish the open waters of southern Yorke peninsula let alone launching at the notorious Marion bay boat ramp. Fortunately for those who arrived during the night it allowed time for them to recuperate from their drive through the night.

As the day passed the wind started to drop, by this time we were resigned to the fact it was time to do some reel maintenance, tying rigs and checking out the sea conditions by driving to Innes National Park. The drive confirmed to us that the conditions on the water had improved , as we neared the house john and crew had arisen and decided to take the chance launching. All going well Gino and Ben also launched, they  tried some inshore drift grounds with the result being eight rugger snapper and many reef dwelling spices caught by the two boats.

Sunday emerged with near perfect conditions at the ramp. Our boat decided to try the whiting grounds straight out from the bay and the orcades bank. The others made the run towards Althorpe Island. The whiting were not in big numbers but the size up to 50cm made them worthwhile pursuing, the other boats landed rugger snapper and Nannygai. Stuart and co. fished land based at Corny Point with good results for their efforts.

Sunday night everybody booked in for dinner at the tavern. It was good to see so many families enjoying themselves.

Monday dawned to a perfect morning, no wind and flat seas. We tried the whiting grounds again but for little return. The other boats returned to the multiple reef systems around the island. We made the late run to a bommie near Althorpe and got three ruggers and a kilo leatherjacket before we had to make the run in for weigh-in and pack up for the long drive home.

Hope to see you at Whyalla
