Text Box: Port Augusta Oct 2003
By John Consadine

It was like any other tournament, anticipation was high and so was the adrenalin. Myself and my crewman Terry left Adelaide at about 1am Friday Night after spending an hour fixing a trailer light that was not broken, thanks Terry. We got to Pt Augusta at 5am and shortly after Paul and June arrived. After discussing on where we should fish we opted to fish Port Augusta. So after no sleep and the sun rising we hit the water. We spent 5 hours at the shacks drifting for squid and only boated 5, pretty dismal. Paul and June were unlucky and got none. From the talk on the radio between other clubs and ours, the fishing sucked. Terry and Myself fished the wall and the wharf all day and got nothing, Until everyone decided to go home.

We were anchored up close to the wall and all of a sudden after 11 hours on the water we got some bites, Salmon, Monster Tommies, Moonlighters, and under sized whiting all did quite well. At about 5.30 it happened!!!, The TLD 25 started to scream, I Was On, at last a big King could not refuse that live squid.

It took off fast, salt spray was flying off the reel, Then into strike and it realised it was hooked, and so did I. After a few minutes the fish made a mockery out of Me and my tackle. Oh well the one that got away. Five minutes later Terry got hit but all it was doing was teasing us by moving the bait.

Sunday came and it was off to Whyalla, Wet Dreams II and Seawolf. It was a beautiful day, Dead flat and perfect tides, Out to the community ground.

We hooked up on some nice Snapper, but as you know 1kg and reefs don’t mix. So no Snapper for us but Paul and June got a few on another ground down south of us.

We had whiting under the boat which was good, Snapper at the back of the boat and a huge school of Doggies. 10 In total, thank god no more doggie fines. Poor old Terry’s 1kg went Screaming, he had an unweighted Pilly out the back for about 10 seconds. It was great until the slack line came back to the boat. All we could do was wonder and then It appeared, 8 feet of Thresher Shark out of the water. Bad luck Terry I think the odds went the sharks way.

Sunday night after weigh in it was time for a feed at the local Pub and discussions on where to fish on Monday morning. We decided on the upper reaches of the river. By the time Wet Dreams II and Wicked got there three boats had already arrived. Knut had already landed a King at 60cm and Robbie and Brad had a school underneath them, unfortunately none were legal so we left before it got to low and there is not enough water to get out.

Final weigh in and everyone was there, After Sunday night there was only 10 points between the top three anglers, So it was close. Scores were tallied and engraving was done. Offshore Male went to Knut followed by Paul, then myself & Terry. Champion Boat went to Snoopy (Knut and Nils), Highest point scoring fish went to Knut, tagging Trophy also went to Knut. Gill Broden took out the Junior award. But all that aside Wet Dreams II and Seawolf took out Champion Club for Northern Districts. To Terry, Paul and June well done for a good effort.
