Whats a master award? In Ansa (Australian National Sportsfishing Association) anglers compete for Master’s Awards. There are various levels of Master’s Awards, eg. 100, 250 and 500 point. There are also various divisions such as Sportsfishing, Gamefishing, Lurecast, Landbase Gamefishing, Flyfishing and Handlining.

The goal is to strive for these awards. There are awards for attaining 10, 20, 30 etc. of these awards. These are called Master Angler Awards. It sounds easy doesn’t it. If only it was.

The first part of attaining a Master Award is first of all landing an ANSA recognised Fish. The full list of fish is listed on this site. (see link below) All ANSA fish have what is called a fighting factor of between .5 to 2.0. The higher the number the harder the fish is to land.

The next step is knowing what line class you are fishing, eg. 1kg, 2kg etc. Once you have landed your fish and know what class you are fishing it is easy to calculate your score.

First take the weight, for example a .955kg Whiting on 1.0kg Line.

                     Multiply the weight by 100                     .955kg X 100   = 95.5

Then multiply by the fighting factor        95.5    X1.3     =124.15

                      Then divide by the line class                   124.15 / 1       = 124.15

Easy isn’t it. All masters awards if large enough are eligible for State and National Records Also. All Senior Masters must be 100 points or larger. All Junior Masters must be larger than 80 points.
