Pt. Augusta Tournament

September 28th to October 1st.

Well it was that time. Time for the October Tournament, a regular fixture on the ANSA calendar and one I am not going to miss. In the Boat for the trip is John Consadine (Fabio the Skipper), Christina Incoll (My girlfriend) and myself. From our club the other people attending are Twiggy with Darryl and Jenny in his boat and Warwick with Kim in his boat.

A small turnout for our club but on par for the time of year. The destination is the pristine fishing grounds (ahh bullshit) of Port Augusta. Our trip started with hitting the road at 12.00am Friday night after work for the four hour drive there. It was uneventful and we arrived at about 4.30 in the morning and proceeded to ensure everyone knew about it.

We hit the water at about 6.30 that morning and headed straight out to the tyre reef. We spent a few hours there with not even a bight registered. Next stop is concrete creek, which for those of you who have not been there is an unusual place which reminds me of the NT with its mangroves and fast currents. It is a difficult place to find and can get shallow in places, which we can personally vouch for as half a metre of water gets a bit scary. We fished there for about 4 hours, (Well Christina fished for 4 Hours, John and myself slept for 2 of them). We caught some very nice sized mullet and tommies, plus some salmon trout to half a kilo. It was very warm and breathless which made sure some extremely bad sunburn was felt.

Since we had not slept we decided to call it a day and head in. After unloading the boat it was off to the shower to clean up for tea down the pub.

I won’t name the pub for fear of getting banned from the town but luckily it was close to the boat ramp (Oops too much info) but the service was poor and the meal quite bad, but hey the beer was cold at least. Saturday night was spent reminiscing about times gone by and those big fish lost.

Sunday morning started literally with a bang as a big storm front rolled through which sounded like it blew our accommodation down. The wind blew hard and the rain bucketed down but it cleared within two hours and we were back on the water for another  days fishing.

First stop was to get some whiting on the far side away from the Power Station. John was the only one on the boat to score some whiting and we left for the power station an hour later.

The move to the power station proved to be a worthwhile one as we had only been there a little while when salmon larger than Saturdays fish moved in and gave us some action for a little while. The Highlight of the morning would have to be Johns Flathead which weighed 970 grams on one kilo line. It was amazing that it was landed due to my poor net work. (I still blame the angler).

We then moved to the other side of the power station where we pulled in some more salmon, whiting and then all hell broke loose. Christina hooked up and it was giving her a workout. After a lot of yelling and advice was given up came an 890gm Flathead which is Christina's biggest ever fish and caught on 1kg line too.

It was no more than a half hour later that Johns rod went crazy and started peeling out line like there was no tomorrow. After about a 15 minute struggle up came a 46 cm 1kg Kingfish which took a pillie strip on a whiting rig. We headed in not long after and weighed our fish in and had a feed of take away.

Sunday night was party night with some good party games and plenty of alcohol.

Due to Sunday night we did not go out on Monday and neither did anyone else from our club for that matter. At presentation time the awards went as follows.

Champion Angler– John Consadine, Champion Team– Northern Districts, Most Meritorious– Christina Incoll, Champion Club– Northern Districts, Champion Boat– Wet Dreams II (John Consadine), Highest point scoring fish– Marcel– Adelaide Sports fishing.

As you can see it was a successful tournament with our club taking out the top four positions and John Consadine even taking out an award in the amateur competition with the heaviest top five bag.

A great time was had by all and our congratulations go out to Port Augusta Sports fishing Club for a Successful first tournament.
