Pt Hughes (Landbased) SEPTEMBER VENUE BY STUART BUTLER
We set out at Midnight Friday with bold plans, Drive to Corny Point, Sleep the night and fish the Lighthouse rocks all day then off to Stenhouse for an all night session. That was not to be, The car started playing up within 10km’s from home. You would accelerate to 110km/h and then the car would after a few minutes lose power to the point you would have to stop and wait for a few minutes and then be off again. Decided to fish Port Vincent for the night and get a mechanic to look Saturday. We caught a few Tommies at Vincent and then made our way to Edithburgh in the early morning. Caught nothing there but did scare a few people I think as our Team Patrol Shirts look like Fisheries Shirts. We fished to around 10am and headed into town to get a mechanic to check over with no faults found and the car not playing up all the way there. We then headed to Corny Point Lighthouse to fish the rocks. We landed various fish such as Tommie’s, Wrasse, small Sweep and Leatherjackets. Fishing was very slow and the swell was unpredictable. We fished to Late Afternoon and then headed to Stenhouse Bay. We decided to get an early night and hit the sack at 4pm and slept to midnight and headed down to a very dark Stenhouse bay Jetty. (Well Prepared, at least we thought we were). We Lugged down to the end of the jetty, A bucket full of burley, Tackle box, 7 Rods, Burley Trap, 9KG Gas Cylinder, Gas Lantern and some munchies. Plan was to light up the jetty with the Lantern and have a little warmth from it. (Big Mistake). On opening the box to the lantern we bought the night before we found no Mantles, there were supposed to be two in them. (Thanks Bunnings). After several minutes of me throwing a temper tantrum we resorted to fishing with a dim dolphin Torch. We did this for about 4 hours with only 5 or so 10cm sand whiting to our name and gave up and hit the sack. Next morning we drove to the Butlers property and fished the rocks there. Fishing was great until we lost our burley cage, well two burley cages. It seemed the fish followed the burley cages away. Off the rocks I caught one of my biggest sweep for quite a while as well as a mix of other species. Bradley struggled to land a wrasse, as every one he caught was 20cm. Eventually had to resort to fishing the bottom with 6kg to land one. Now for the past two days the car did not play up, until we decided to head home at about 5pm. We eventually drove the 250 odd kms in about 8 hours to arrive home around 1am very tired. The car is still not fixed after testing the coil, distributor, fuel pump, fuel filter, air cleaner, petrol lid and a few other things. Very frustrating. Thankfully the fishing was good and we scored a respectful 2nd and 3rd place. Stuart Team Patrol
